Outside Dinner

developing a healthy sense of self

                          and relationships built on compassion

Welcome, as you think about therapy you will no doubt have some questions, for example ....

               How does work?

              How long does it take?

              How much does it cost?

How can I find out it whether this is right for me?

It may be you have been feeling overwhelmed, are struggling with relationship challenges, or have ruminative thoughts, anxiety and low mood that negatively impact on your usual functioning.   Finding a therapist you feel at ease with is your first step. In fact a therapeutic relationship that feels totally genuine and knowing you are accepted without judgment is crucial to your success in therapy.

My aim is to provide you with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere; a safe place where you can feel confident to explore your challenges, and give yourself the time to really consider your own needs, perhaps for the first time.  I will listen and work in partnership with you to identify the issues that are most important to you and your potential treatment goals.  Through a client centred approach we will develop plan and way of working together that is tailor made to meet your identified needs and the presenting problem.  I will honour your values, and support you in your challenges.

The basis of Interpersonal Psychotherapy is that positive relationships, and a healthy sense of self provide the foundation for mental wellbeing. With that in mind I promote holistic self-care as we explore connection, understanding and strategies for positive change.

Your investment

Therapy should be viewed as an investment in you.  It might 'go against the grain' to prioritise your own needs, but only you can do that for yourself, and you deserve it.

How long will it take....

This will depend on a number of things including the problems you would like to address, and how much they affect your daily life; how long you have had the issue, and how much distress the issues cause you.  If you have a specific problem you may be looking for short term therapy over just a few weeks, with more complex issues taking longer.  Entering into therapy involves active participation and the work between sessions might involve: reflecting on the session, practicing strategies or trying out different ways of communicating. Being able to commit to time and energy for yourself will facilitate your success in therapy.  Part of developing a treatment plan includes planning the number of sessions.  We will regularly review how you are progressing and whether there have been changes in you priorities. I will seek feedback on what works for you to ensure your therapy journey is a positive one.

“When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.”
